Looking through Goggles at Google!

Updated Google's Goggles App

Google unveiled an updated application for Android and Apple smartphones today. Dubbed “Goggles” the application is a visual scanner and offers faster bar code and QR code scanning.

The update comes with enhanced recognition for printed QR codes, with the user simply having to take a picture of the ad. Goggles will also return results on the product as well as information on the brand and company, reviews, and even if there is a better deal to be found. Using Google’s search along with the scan will provide an unending source of information to those curious. Google claims that the scan will work on all print ads in major U.S. magazine since August 2010.

Along with its increased QR performance, Goggles can also solve puzzles. Google has enabled any smartphone user to solve the most mind churning of Sudoku puzzles with the click of a button. Taking a picture of the puzzle, Goggles will complete the challenge quickly.

The update is not without its hitch, however. Many users are claiming to suffer from a “502 error” when attempting to use the puzzle solver. An issue that Google is working to fix.

With Google putting more effort into barcode scanning technology, the prevalence of and necessity of mobile marketing is becoming more apparent. With the interactivity offered through use of QR codes, print media, once thought to be on the road to obsolescence, is making a comeback.

The Google Goggles application is available for all Android and iOS mobile devices.
